How it works
What this tool does
A modern app needs dozens of icon files: five densities of launcher icon for Android, separate foreground and background layers for adaptive icons, a 512 pixel Play Store icon, a full iOS AppIcon set with its Contents.json, and favicons for the web. Making them by hand in an image editor is slow and easy to get wrong.
This generator takes one square image and produces all of them. It runs in your browser using the canvas, so your artwork is never uploaded to a server. You can leave your logo on your own machine from start to finish.
How to use it, step by step
- Upload a square image. 1024 by 1024 pixels gives the sharpest result. A transparent PNG or an SVG works best because you control the background.
- Choose a background colour. It fills the adaptive background layer, the iOS icon (which must not be transparent) and the Play Store icon.
- Adjust padding. More padding makes the artwork smaller inside the icon. Most logos look best with 10 to 20 percent.
- Read the previews and the warning. If part of your artwork falls outside the adaptive safe zone, the tool tells you.
- Generate and download. Unzip into your project: the
resfolder merges into your Android module and the AppIcon.appiconset folder goes into your Xcode asset catalog.
Adaptive icons and the safe zone, explained
Since Android 8, launcher icons are adaptive. You supply two layers, each 108 by 108 dp, and the launcher decides the outer shape: a circle on one phone, a rounded square or a teardrop on another. The two layers can also move slightly to create a parallax effect.
Because the shape varies and the layers can shift, only the central 66 by 66 dp is guaranteed to stay visible. The remaining outer area is the bleed zone and may be cropped. Anything important, such as a letter, a face or a symbol, must live inside that safe zone. In the previews, the dashed circle shows it.
The foreground layer carries your artwork on a transparent background. The background layer is a solid colour or simple pattern. Keeping them separate lets the system mask and animate them. This tool places your image inside the safe zone by default and warns you if the visible artwork would still reach beyond it.
Which sizes you get
- Android legacy launcher icons in mdpi (48 px), hdpi (72), xhdpi (96), xxhdpi (144) and xxxhdpi (192), plus round versions.
- Adaptive icon layers at 108 dp for each density (108 to 432 px), the background colour resource, and the anydpi-v26 XML files that tie them together.
- Play Store icon at 512 by 512 pixels, the size the Play Console asks for.
- iOS AppIcon set with every iPhone, iPad and App Store size and the Contents.json that Xcode reads. These icons are opaque and square; iOS rounds the corners itself.
- Favicons at 16, 32, 180, 192 and 512 pixels with a site.webmanifest snippet and the link tags to paste into your page head.
Design tips that make icons work
- Keep one clear idea. Icons are viewed at 48 pixels or smaller, so fine detail disappears.
- Avoid text unless it is one or two letters. Words become unreadable on a home screen.
- Use strong contrast between the symbol and the background so it survives light and dark wallpapers.
- Do not add your own rounded corners, shadows or glossy effects. The platform applies shape and lighting.
- Test on a real phone. Place the icon next to apps you use every day and see whether it stands out. Then tune the rest of your store page with the Play Store listing optimizer. Good icon and interface design is part of our UI/UX design work.
Common mistakes
- Uploading a logo that already includes its own rounded corners, which then get masked twice.
- Leaving a transparent background on the iOS icon. App Store Connect rejects icons with transparency.
- Placing the logo edge to edge in an adaptive icon, so a circular mask cuts it off.
- Using a low-resolution image. Start from 1024 pixels or an SVG.
- Forgetting to update the favicon and web manifest when the app icon changes.
